Safety and emergency response remain central to the tower’s mission in its second life. The next morning, I don a wetsuit and a snorkel and again brave the hoist, which lowers me straight into a school of fish being stalked by five stealthy barracuda. At night, atop the rooftop helipad, Neal launches fireworks towards a blanket of a million stars, while the rest of us sing folk songs around a crackling fire. The five other guests do, however, and we eat fish fried fresh for dinner. Neal and I drop fishing hooks from the tower’s platforms, but find little luck. “We’ve had some engineers out and they think it’s still okay,” he says. The tower was deemed structurally sound when Neal bought it 12 years ago, but it hasn’t had a proper inspection since. The wraparound grated-steel platforms are loose in some areas, cordoned off with rope, and it‘s not hard to imagine an 80-foot fall to the water below. Its massive metal pilings, drilled into the ocean floor, are covered with rust. The tower has been severely battered by the sea for more than half a century. The experience of visiting, however, is not for the faint of heart. ( How to save a lighthouse? Sleep in one.) The eight bedrooms, each one named for a different North Carolina lighthouse, are far from fully renovated, but are comfortable and sparingly decorated with nautical pieces from the tower’s past-dusty life preservers, old maps, and analog weather instruments and radios. There are two modern bathrooms with several flushing toilets, large sinks, and hot-water showers, from which wastewater is deposited deep into the ocean. “Everybody that comes out here and has a heart to restore the tower gets to participate.”įrying Pan exists completely off the grid, powered by solar panels (with a backup generator for heat and air conditioning). “Depending on their skillset, they may be doing some electrical work, they might be doing some welding, they might be sweeping the floor or doing laundry,” Neal says. In exchange they receive free room and board. They must cover their own transportation costs-usually a few hundred dollars to hitch a bouncy, two-hour boat ride with fishermen (or more for an easy 20-minute helicopter flight). Volunteers willing to help with restoration work can join Neal at Frying Pan. government for $85,000, but he has since divested his ownership, and now runs a nonprofit tasked with its preservation and renewal. In 2010, Neal bought the tower at auction from the U.S. ( America’s women lighthouse keepers are finally being seen.) An eco-adventure like none otherįrying Pan is the only one at least somewhat accessible to the public. Just three remain standing today: Diamond Shoals Light, off the coast of North Carolina’s Cape Hatteras Chesapeake Light, marking the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia and Frying Pan Tower. Most were first automated, and then decommissioned, left to rust in the dark until they were declared structurally unsound and eventually dismantled. Seven of these so-called “Texas Tower” lighthouses, which look similar to offshore oil rigs, were built during the 20th century at strategic locations along the East Coast. It is an intimidating yet extraordinary place, a rare chance to spend time on-and help save-one of the few structures of its kind left in the world. Neal is the 62-year-old owner and manager of Frying Pan Tower: a hulking, 80-foot-tall lighthouse 32 miles off the coast of North Carolina that’s now being restored into a high-tech marine conservation outpost and eco-adventure lodge. “I haven’t dropped anyone-yet,” Neal says with a smile, only after he’s gotten the hoist working again a few minutes later and I’ve been safely brought into the tower’s entrance. For a moment I’m stuck in midair, dangling 60 feet above the sea. “Whoops, hang on,” Richard Neal calls out calmly from the tower’s deck. Suddenly, the hoist shudders and comes to a halt. Coast Guard light station where I’ll be staying for the weekend. A wooden plank beneath me lurches like a swing, lifting me upward, off the boat, and far above the water, towards the entrance to an old U.S. “Send him up!” a fisherman says into his radio as I sit precariously on the bow of his boat, bobbing in the cold swells of the Atlantic, more than 30 miles from shore.

Predators was released in the United States on July 9, 2010, grossed over $24 million on its opening weekend, and has since grossed over $52 million in the United States, with an estimated total of $127 million worldwide. There are more than 5 million children aged 11-17 in England and Wales, and experts believe significant numbers are now at “greater risk” of exploitation and will lack adult supervision either online or in the outside world. Principal photography for Predators began on Septemand concluded after 53 days filming took place in Hawaii and then in Austin, Texas. The title also has a double meaning, referring both to the extraterrestrial Predator creatures and to the group of human characters who are pitted against them. According to Rodriguez, the title Predators is an allusion to the second film in the Alien franchise, Aliens (1986). Producer Robert Rodriguez had developed a script for a third instalment as early as 1994, although it was not until 2009 that 20th Century Fox green lit the project. They find that they have been abducted and placed on a planet which acts as a game reserve for two warring tribes of extraterrestrial killers, and actively look for a way to return to Earth. The film follows an ensemble cast of characters, including Royce (Adrien Brody), a mercenary who appears in an unidentified jungle among other proficient killers. It is the third instalment of the Predator franchise. Maximize appointments and minimize downtime resulting from no-shows. ‘Perfection’ isn’t achievable, says Hallett, but it’s the benchmark to work towards.” – Gaby Loria, The Lean Doctor’s Office: Using Value Stream Mapping to Improve Your Workflow, Software Advice Twitter: !ģ. Some steps that aren’t directly valuable for patients are necessary to your practice (such as proper coding). Of course, it won’t be possible to eliminate all waste. “You’re identifying the waste in order to eliminate it. Hagerty points out that motion (such as the doctor moving out of the exam room to find supplies) and duplication (such as the doctor repeating questions the medical assistant just asked) are other forms of waste, so they’d also get red dots. “Any step with a ‘wait’ triangle should get a red dot. Kozlowski puts red and green dot stickers on the steps: green for value-added, and red for non-value-added steps. Waiting in the waiting room? Not valuable.) Mark each step to indicate whether it delivers direct value. “Look at each step on your map and ask yourself whether that step is directly valuable to a patient. By standardizing these best practices, you can eliminate waste in your processes.” – _Jennie Welch, Improving Clinical Workflow: An Example from the Emergency Department, Health Catalyst Twitter: Analyze each step in your value stream map to identify waste. Then evaluate the flow and determine the most effective method (the best practice) for carrying out each step in that process. The concept of value-stream mapping is simple but highly effective: identify the flow of work throughout the ED for various conditions (e.g., stroke). “Value-stream maps are useful for pinpointing workflow process improvement potential. Use value-stream maps to pinpoint opportunities to improve workflows. From standardizing your clinical processes to adopting automation solutions and leveraging smart staffing strategies, there are many steps healthcare organizations can take to remove barriers and optimize clinical workflows. Coupled with other challenges, such as inefficient staffing and challenges associated with the transition to value-based care, many providers find their workflows becoming more complex, not less.īelow, we’ve rounded up 50 expert tips and best practices from health innovators and thought leaders to help you recognize common clinical workflow constraints and implement the right solutions to overcome them. While solutions like Integrate can eliminate many workflow obstacles, healthcare organizations working with cobbled-together or outdated IT solutions face an uphill battle. Integrate empowers clinicians with real-time, relevant data for clinical decision support and supports bi-directional workflow interaction between EHRs and third-party applications, eliminating the need for data duplication and automating tedious, manual tasks such as chart retrieval and copying and faxing records to other providers. For instance, robust API solutions like Integrate reduce the administrative burden on clinicians and staff by enabling the seamless exchange of data across EHRs and non-clinical applications. Evaluating a solution’s potential impacts on workflow should be a primary consideration when evaluating any new technology solution. Poorly-integrated solutions can actually hinder clinical workflows by making it necessary for clinicians to duplicate data across multiple applications or log in and out of several systems to find the relevant clinical data they need to inform clinical decision-making. As providers face pressure to do more in less time, technology tools like EHRs seem like a practical solution, yet implementing new technologies doesn’t always solve workflow issues. Healthcare organizations are embracing innovative technologies at a faster pace than ever before, but clinical workflow management remains a pain point for providers. You can use a Style as a starting point, then add or delete graphic elements, and change, reposition, or add text fields. Of course, you don't have to use the Styles as they are. By using Styles and the information available on a disc, making a handsome jewel case cover and label can be faster than putting on earrings. For any remaining fields not filled in, you can just double-click the text boxes and enter data manually. Audio CD info will be automatically looked up on the Web for you. Hitting the "Auto-Fill from Disc" button then polls your disc drive and returns with title, contents, artist, and other information and places it in the appropriate fields. If you've entered any of that information already while burning your CD-R in Creator, Label Creator can read it off the disc and position it for you in the label using the Smart Objects feature (click the Smart Objects button at left to select the elements you want on your label). For Audio CDs it might also include the artist name and song list. For data CDs, that information will likely be title, contents, and date created. Once you've selected a design theme, it's time to enter information about your project into the text fields. (Don't worry, you can also create custom designs, which we'll get to later.)Ĭustomizing a disc label with Label Creator (click to enlarge). A Style can be applied to all the parts of your project for a consistent look, or just a particular layout. Simply choosing a Style (by clicking on the Select Style button at the left of the screen) and filling in relevant information creates a handsome jewel case package. Styles are professional graphics backgrounds combined with strategically placed text fields. The easiest way to add glamour in Label Creator is to choose from one of the many different pre-designed templates, or Styles. And Label Creator helps you there, as well. The linked layouts will then appear in the window, and you can move back and forth between them.Īll the templates are sized to fit perfectly into standard plastic jewel boxes, so all you need to do is add artwork and information. To get started, choose all the layouts that apply to your project, such as label, booklet and back insert for an audio CD. Other layout options include: front and back jewel case inserts, booklets, slim case inserts, mini disc labels, core labels, disc sleeves, and DVD case inserts and booklets. At startup you will be presented with a generic template for the disc label. To launch Label Creator in full mode, choose it directly from the Windows Start menu in the Roxio Creator Applications folder, or by clicking the "Edit in Label Creator" button at the end of the Express Labeler wizard (this method lets you start a label quickly in the wizard, and then use Label Creator to add custom elements). Taking the fast lane to disc labels with Express Labeler. Instead, we'll show you how to get creative by customizing your labels and inserts. We won't go into the details here, since they are largely self-evident. You can have finished labels in just a few clicks, using the convenient styles and automatic track name import. Express Labeler provides a series of dialogs that quickly step you through the process of creating labels, booklets, inserts and more. It's also available from the Tools menu within Label Creator. For quickest results, use the Express Labeler wizard, which is invoked whenever you launch Label Creator from within another Roxio application. There are two basic ways to use Label Creator. Look for discs labeled "LightScribe" or "printable." For both LightScribe and direct disc printing, you'll need to buy special recordable media. Printers with direct CD/DVD print support are available from Canon, Epson and HP, among others, and LightScribe drives from companies like HP, Samsung, and Toshiba. They have a cool holographic look, and come in several colors. LightScribe is a technology that etches labels right onto the reverse side of specially made discs, using the laser in your recorder. We recommend the latter two printing methods for discs, since stick-on labels can sometimes get stuck in slot-loading drives like those in many cars and most Apple Macs. You can print three ways: to label templates from most major manufacturers, such as Avery and Neato to printable discs with an appropriate printer or even directly to disc using a LightScribe drive. It's simple with the included Label Creator program. Tired of scrawled titles on burned CDs and DVDs? Bring out your secret weapon in the war against the black magic marker: Roxio Creator 2012!
